Sub genres

Welcome back! In the last two blogs I talked 3 different  genres I was interested in doing for the film opening. I came to the conclusion that romance would be the best drama for me to do and started looking into how to write a meet cute, to see if I could get any ideas. Today I will be looking at the different subgenres of romance and dive deeper into how to make the opening of a romance film.

When researching the different subgenres of the romance genre, the two that stood out to me were romantic comedies, and romantic dramas. A lot of my favorite movies are romantic comedies. They incorporate lots of dialogue with light humor throughout the movie, leaving the audience happy and satisfied at the end of the movie. On the other hand. in addition to addressing other topics including hardships, death, separation, adultery, and the emergence of love triangles, romantic dramas delve further into the contradictory feelings of passion and relationships.

I think doing a romantic drama is the best idea for the film opening. This is because I get to portray a lit of emotions while keeping the dialogue short and sweet. I can focus more on the actions of the main characters and use those actions to tell the first two minutes of a story.

Some of my favorite romantic dramas that I think have great openings include, A Walk to Remember and After.

I think incorporating drama with the meet cute would make a very intriguing and good film opening and I'm very excited to get started.

That wraps up the blog post for today! Thanks again for reading! I'll see you in the next one.

Genre Research Part 2

Hi! Welcome back to my blog! In my last post we discussed both the romance and thriller genres in film. Today we will be discussing the drama genre. Many people sometimes confuse romance and thriller films for drama films so I think it will interesting to see how they differ.

To start off the drama genre focusses on characters emotions and how they handle conflict and changes. Obviously the drama genre is very dramatic and requires a lot of passion within the actors. In dramas, actors use a lot more than just words. They have to show emotion with their movements as well. Actions speak louder than words. A lot of common themes in drama include family and relationships, identity, morality and justice, and society and class.

I think after researching thriller, romance, and drama, I would want to do a romance for the film opening, I think it would be fun to do a meet-cute/love at first sight trope for the opening of a movie and I think I could portray it really well. When it comes to dramas and thrillers, I feel like it's harder to show that much emotion with just the first few minutes of a film opening.

Writing a Meet Cute — From Eternal Sunshine to La La Land, Romeo to Scott Pilgrim

I started researching how to write a meet cute and came across this video which taught me a lot on different types of meet cutes and how their portrayed. I think my favorite one was the push/push because I feel like it would be very fun to write about two characters who are both in a sort of conflict from the start, and see it come to life.

The movie they used for the push/push trope was "La La Land" Which i felt was a perfect example. Here is the scene that they gave as an example.

Thank you so much for reading! In the next post I will dive deeper into subgenres so stay tuned! Until next time.

Genre research

Today I did some research on a few different genres to see what I might want to do for my film opening. I came across a lot of interesting things and ideas so lets get right into it!

The first genre that I researched was Romance. Romance is personally my favorite genre when it comes to film, so I was very excited to learn more about it and what exactly it entails. I found multiple resources that were very helpful in explaining how to portray romance in film and what things are typical of the romance genre.

For example, in "A Deep Dive Into All the Feels of the Romance Genre" Robinson explains that a lot of romances combine love at first sight with you're typical meet-cute. A good example of a meet cute would be like when the characters run into each other and one of them end up spilling coffee on the other. They combine this kind of trope with the love at first sight trope which is common in many rom-coms from the early 2000s.

The movie "The Notebook" is a good example of the meet-cute love at first sight trope where Noah immediately falls for Alley. So is "How to Loose a Guy in 10 Days" and "The Proposal."

Robinson also dives into the "opposites attract" trope which is also shown in these popular movies. Conflicting personalities, adversarial circumstances and economic and social opposites (pretty woman) are all typical of the opposites attract trope. In "The Notebook" you can see the economic and social opposites with Noah and Alley. They eventually have to overcome this adversity in order to be happy together in the end.

The other genre that I researched was The thriller genre (another one of my favorites)

The thriller genre is distinguished by the mood it creates in the audience. When emotions of worry and suspense are brought out, then you know it's a thriller.

When researching I learned that suspense is a very big part of the thriller genre. It is a crucial part to creating the perfect thriller movie and without suspense it is very hard to brin the audience to the edge of their seats when watching this genre.

While thriller can have many subgenres it is very common to see action, horror, and drama in thriller movies and tv shows. Many thriller pieces involve crime and psychotic main characters. One of my favorite thrillers is "Straw" a Tyler Perry movie. I think this movie clearly depicts what a thriller should look like.

Well that brings my blog to end for now! Hopefully you enjoyed my exploration of these two genres as much as I did. Thank you so much for reading and see you next time!
